Aim & Objectives

I take painting classes for specially enabled children. Many lack the fine motor skill needed for drawing. But with autism are very sensitive to touch and don’t like water/poster colors spreading on their hands/dresses. So I usually go for digital art. As the Krita software is having many inbuilt brushes, children find it easy to paint, especially nature sceneries like water, grass, trees, flowers etc. In this tutorial, I am showing how to create reflections in water in a very easy method. Children were very surprised to see the reflections made so quickly with just 2-3 steps. Their imagination geared up and they started creating different types of sceneries and their reflections in water.

Learning Outcomes

Digital painting has many features like layer, copy, flipping etc. Using all these techniques, a beautiful reflection is created within a short time, by using simple steps. Krita 4.3.0 is an open software. It has many inbuilt brushes which help the children to create wonderful paintings with very little effort and time.
Children are attracted by these inbuilt brushes and they go on trying many styles using these brushes, which ignites their imagination and creativity. With this lesson, children could easily create nature sceneries with the in-built brushes and its reflections. Duplication the layer, then flipping it horizontally, moving down and reducing the opacity of that layer, proper reflections can be created. Otherwise, this would involve many strokes and steps.

Process for the Lesson

The software Krita, is very much loved by children as it has many inbuilt brushes. They go on trying different sceneries using their brushes. Often, the outcomes are very fantastic and surprising. In my experience I have seen many children, with autism with no/poor verbal skills, using the means of paintings as their way of communication. So I always encourage children to use their imagination in painting what all are there in their mind.

In this lesson, I am showing how to create reflections in water. Usually children avoided painting reflections and it may not come proper. It has to be an exact replica of the objects and also float on the water. But in digital painting, with a few simple steps proper reflections can be made. The concept of layers played an important role in this lesson. Children could easily understand the concept of opacity and how, when it should be used. They could also learn the concept of flipping and mirror images. When children found that creating reflections is so easy, they created many sceneries and their reflections. It is a fun way too, where there is no stress and less time is required. Most differently enabled children, who have poor fine motor skill, often attempt only abstract paintings. But when proper, fun – based simple training are given, they are enthusiastic to try sceneries and objects too.
