Aim & Objectives
Taking old books, and opening up a new creative process to have old books reimagined. Fashioning them out of such fragile material, the students are taught to reinterpret them as delicate and solid sculptural and architectural forms at the same time, with minimal intervention.
Students are taught the art of three-dimensional objects. They create freestanding pieces from flat surfaces. They are encouraged to see art even in seemingly non-artistic elements. The notion of bringing the book to life by using techniques like carving, modeling, molding and casting to shape a unique object of their liking.

Students also learn the art of patience through meticulous carving while learning the techniques of analyzing various textures and forms in order to create the work.
Process for the Lesson
The students first choose a vintage, hardbound book of their choice. They are then asked to imagine the sculpture and sketch out various angles of the same.
They are asked to decide which elements of the piece would be three-dimensional and which would be highlighted as two-dimensional accents.
Once the vision is in place, they then prepare the book for sculpting. Prior to begin sculpting the book, the students test out their vision on various materials like clay, m-seal, and thermocol to create references for the main object.
The book is then meticulously carved in order to create the shape of the object from the pages of the book itself. Through the process, the students consistently refer their sketches and the practice models of clay, thermocol or m-seal.
The final object is then assembled together on the open book, to make it appear as though the book has come to life in a 3-dimensional manner.
